4/4 Easter Sunday Bastrop to Somerville
Easter Sunday, we passed a ranch w/some metal art - you see a lot of this on entry gates, etc. A horse w/rider dismounted, hat in hand, down on one knee facing a large wooden cross (I'll post the picture). At first Mike thought it was a grave site, but I point out that I thought it symbolized Easter. Mike gave a salute of respect for the sacrifice for which it stood. Mike and I started the ride. It was very humid. Confusing riding directions. We had to pay $2 each to ride 11 miles thru a state park. roads were wet and slippery from light rain. Rolling short, but steep graded hills. On 2 of these hills the rear wheel on the tandem just spun around - no traction - Russ said not enough weight on the rear of the bike. we had to walk up one hill for lack of traction. Finally out of the park and on flat roads we dried out as we rode. I saved a turtle by removing it from the middle of the road. Later when Denise was riding they went between 2 towns called Round Top and Warrenton which was like one huge antique/flea market at least 8 mi long. Property owners lease out space on both sides of the road for dealers to set up their tents. Huge displays in tents, barns, garages, and fields. Rode to Burton and drove to Somerville St Park - 36 mi off route - nothing else available. Mike & Russ swam in the lake. I was talking to Shawn and without thinking grabbed Mike & Russ' riding gear and brought it into the motor home. We immediately had at least 100 mosquitoes inside. A nice man also warned us not to walk at night w/o a flash- light and then showed us a picture of a copper head snake in the middle of the road!
