Lockhart to Bastrop 4/3
McMahan-Bateman-Red Rock to Bastrop to Colorado River RV Park. Below average park. 6 mi off the route and the pool was green. Hadn't cleaned it as they don't open it until May. 80 deg day and we couldn't swim! The Colorado River wasn't any better. Besides, Mike is now wary of the snakes in the water. Road conditions: no shoulder, some traffic, good scenery. West Texas to Blanco "Wild West is sage brush, cactus, flat land, mesas. Eastern Texas green, fancy ranches. Rode by VFW BBQ cook off - 100 people or so. Beans, brisket, ribs - winners go to another level of competition. These cook offs are a big deal in Texas. Met some real characters, i.e. Mike and Bubba - mike had a converted travel trailer- half a roof, cooking facilities/custom for the task. Bubba, a retired trucker, slow drawl offered words of wisdom for riding safety. Everyone almost w/o exception was downing the suds..it was almost 11:15 when we pulled of the route to check it out. For the most part all of these encounters have been more than friendly - offers of food, drink and conversation. After arriving at the previously described camp, the boys offered to do the grocery shopping which included a trip to the local ice cream shop, The Sugar Shack, for a milk shake.
