March 1st - The Big Day! Headed to Mission Beach for photo op and the start of the bike ride. Russ & Denise couldn't agree on where to take the picture and while debating the point Russ, Denise, our sparkling cider & cups all got nailed by a wave. Finally success with the photo and off the guys went. They got lost in Ocean Beach Park at the very start of the ride. Riding through San Diego, Santee and Lakeside was very stressful due to traffic and rough shoulders where bike lanes were non-existant. Russ is now calling Mike "Red Light Mike" as he missed almost all of the lights in the towns.
Mission Trails Regional Park was the most scenic of the 1st day.
Then hell set in with a 3500' climb all at one time (no downhill). Physically tired out at 48.5 miles total. Mike thought they'd be able to do 74 miles, but no such luck.
March 2nd - Easier Day! Completed the rest of the day before's mileage - 27 miles. Climbed another 500' before getting some downhill time. Back in campground by noon. Relaxing afternoon. Mike and Russ will be riding to El Centro tomorrow. Denise and I will drive the motorhome.
The mugs we are holding were made by Russ for all of us commemorating the bike ride. Tim - Russ said to tell you the mug holds exactly 1 & 3/4 pints. That's how we're drinking our beer on this trip.

I love the mugs! You guys will be successful for sure. Claudia
ReplyDeleteI need a mug like that! Nearly 2 pints at a crack... Probably gives more of a bicep workout on the curls anyway. Where's the map??? Are the boys and I supposed to just guess the route? ;-) Tell Russ that he apparently is no different on a bike than when he is driving!
